Taxis in the old village

Before the conquest these streets were the island's capital, and Teguise still keeps that old quarter of cobbles and whitewash, set back from the shore. Days keep village hours: a square, a church, a market once a week, and lanes no driver is meant to rush along.

Where the car has to stop

None of the old quarter was laid out with a car in mind. The lanes are narrow, cobbled and uphill, and a good few of them are past what a driver will take a car through in comfort. What usually happens is that the vehicle sets you down at the bottom, or at the last point it can reach, and you walk up the rest. If your mobility is limited, or you are out with a pram, say so when you order — the driver then picks an approach the car can actually manage.

Sunday, when the stalls take over

On Sundays the traditional market fills the centre from early, with stalls standing where traffic would otherwise pass. Parking is hard, the cars crawl, and a great many of the people there have come up from the coast for the day. Going out by taxi and coming back by taxi saves you the search for a space — and it is worth ringing ahead, because the dispatch that serves the village is also the one covering the Teguise coast.

A rank at the centre, a line for the rest

The village has a signposted rank at its central points, but no rank runs the length of the old quarter. Where you cannot see a car, ring the Teguise dispatch: one line answers for the village and for Costa Teguise alike. From Ireland, dial 0034 — Spain's international dialling code — ahead of the number. Failing that, ask in a village bar: they usually know roughly when one tends to pass and which number to ring.

Over the island, not along the coast

Teguise sits inland, so the run from the terminal goes across the island instead of hugging the shore. To be into the old quarter soon after landing, the plainest way is to have the car sent straight out to the village. If cases are coming as well, say on the phone how many there are and what size they are — not once the car is already in front of you.

Frequently asked questions

Will the car bring me up to the old quarter?

The lanes are narrow and cobbled, so the usual arrangement is to set you down at the bottom, or at whatever point the driver can get a car to. If you need to go higher than that, say it when you order: it is settled on the phone, not at the kerb, where the car may have no room left to manoeuvre.

Which day suits best for going into Teguise by taxi?

The traditional market runs on Sundays and fills the centre with stalls and visitors. A taxi is what saves you the parking on those days — and Sunday is also the day most people are ringing, so give the dispatch notice with margin to spare, and settle the run back before you wander into the village.

How does the airport run compare with the coast?

The village is inland, so the road crosses the island and the run is a longer one than to the settlements on the east coast. The indicative figure here is a road estimate carrying the date it was checked, and the amount is whatever the meter reaches as it goes.

Who do I ring to get back to my accommodation on the coast?

The Teguise dispatch, which covers the village and Costa Teguise both — or, if you are in the village, ask whether a taxi passes the point you are standing at. This portal handles no bookings: your notice goes to the operator directly, and the wait depends on the cars free at that moment.
