Taxis around the capital
Lights, offices, shops, a port and a seafront quarter around the Charco de San Ginés: Arrecife is the only spot on Lanzarote that moves like a town of any size. Its taxis follow that rhythm, with stands that stay in place and others that roam — and no train anywhere to rival them.

What the town asks of a taxi
Arrecife is where the island keeps the things you cannot get anywhere else on it: the hospital, the bus station, the banks, the schools, the public offices. That is why so many of the fares here are short hops between one of those and another, and why the hour you travel matters more than the distance — a run across town at ten in the morning and the same run at two is not the same journey.
Where you find a car, and where you do not
The ranks are posted at the points where people actually wait: the centre, outside the bus station, around the hospital and along the port. They are not on every street, and no one should expect them to be. Where a rank is not in sight, a car going by with its vacant light lit can be flagged down, as anywhere on the island — but in the capital that is harder than on an empty coast road, so having the dispatch number to hand is what saves the wait.
The airport is not far
The terminal sits on the same eastern shore, which makes this one of the shortest transfers on the island. Cars wait outside on the arrivals side and the procedure is the one used everywhere else here: take the first in the queue, or ring the dispatch if you would rather have a particular car at a particular moment.
Short runs, and asking the driver to wait
Inside the town the meter starts as you get in and follows the route actually driven, with whatever supplements apply to that journey. If you need the car to hold on — a hospital appointment, an errand, a school run — say so before you set off rather than at the end, so the driver can allow for the time and neither of you is surprised by the figure at the finish.
Frequently asked questions
Which parts of Arrecife have taxi ranks? +
The busiest points: the centre, the bus station, the hospital area and the port. Not every street has one. Where you cannot see a rank, you can stop a car that is going by with its vacant light on, or call the dispatch for the municipality.
Can I hail a taxi as it passes? +
Yes, provided the car is working and showing that it is free. A vehicle already carrying somebody, or already committed to a fare, will keep going. If you would rather not risk signalling at the wrong moment, use a signposted rank or ring the dispatch instead.
Is the run from the airport into town a long one? +
No. It is among the shortest transfers on the island. The figure printed here is a road estimate with the date it was checked rather than a promised duration, and what you pay is what the meter reaches — that journey has no set price attached to it.
Will I find a taxi after midnight? +
Arrecife is the island's late-night town, so it is the likeliest place of any to find cars still working. Even so, at those hours calling the dispatch beats standing at a rank: what turns up depends on how many cars are free at that moment.
