Taxi prices in Lanzarote: what the meter covers

Only one number here binds: the meter, running on the fares Aena approved and published for the airport, and every amount shown on this page is in euro. Anything else you find online — a route priced in advance, a transfer quoted by a third party — is an estimate, and keeping the two apart is what this page is for.

Operator prices published without the Canary Islands indirect tax or the Sunday and holiday increase that some operators apply. The meter is the only binding figure.

Indicative distances and times: island traffic changes them at any hour.

What the meter is actually charging for

Every line of the table above is Aena's own published tariff for the airport, and it is worth knowing what each one pays for before you get in. One charge covers the moment the driver switches the meter on, a second covers each kilometre travelled, and a third covers the time the car spends standing still. On top of those sit two supplements: one for the radio-dispatch call itself, and one for a journey that starts or finishes inside the airport or port gates. Read them together and any fare on the island becomes traceable back to its own arithmetic.

Nights, Sundays, holidays and the Christmas window

A fare is not the same figure all week. After midnight, on Sundays and on public holidays the island moves onto its second tariff, which lifts both the opening charge and the per-kilometre rate above the weekday level. A third band applies across the Christmas period, in the exact dates the tariff itself sets out. None of this is left to the driver's discretion — every band is published in advance, which is why it is worth asking which one is running when you book rather than when you arrive.

Why a route price quoted in advance is only an estimate

Prices quoted online for a particular journey are not fares at all: they are figures an operator has published from its own list, each carrying the date it was last checked. Some leave out the Canary Islands indirect tax, and some leave out the Sunday and public-holiday uplift that others apply. Neither omission is dishonest, but both mean a quoted number can sit below what the meter finally shows. Treat any advance route price as a budget, and the meter as the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What should I expect to pay from the airport to Playa Blanca?

It runs the length of the island, so it sits at the top of the route list rather than the bottom — the indicative figure and the date it was last checked are both printed alongside it. Traffic and the exact drop-off point move the final amount, and the meter settles it at the end.

Can I agree a set price with the driver before setting off?

Not under the official tariff: the taxi runs on the meter, plus the supplement for starting or finishing within the airport enclosure. Some operators do advertise a fixed price by destination, but that is a commercial offer of their own rather than a rate the authority has set, and it does not replace the metered charge you are otherwise owed. If you take one, get the terms in writing before the car moves.
