Taxis at the northern port

White houses, a fishermen's pier and the boat across to La Graciosa: that is Órzola, at the top of the island. Life here runs to the ferry's departures more than anywhere else on Lanzarote, and a taxi journey is fitted around them rather than the reverse.

A pier, a slope and a couple of bars

The port comes down to the pier itself, a few streets on the slope above it and the bars and restaurants around them. There is no promenade and no shopping to speak of — the whole place is crossed on foot. People use the taxi to climb up into the village, to carry on towards Arrieta or to arrive with cases from other points of the island.

Timed around the boat

Most people heading for the boat do so with their cases and a sailing time to make. The ships keep their own timetable and the drive in from the interior is a long one, so the sensible course is to order the taxi with plenty of margin and to say on the phone that you are sailing — the driver can then judge the boot space and the time.

No rank network, one dispatch for the north

At the port there is nothing like a network of ranks: cars turn up at the busiest points, or more often they are ordered by phone. The Haría dispatch serves the whole municipality — Órzola, Arrieta, Famara and the village of Haría — so one contact is enough for the whole north.

A long run, with a climb at the end

Órzola is on the north coast and the journey from the terminal is among the longest on the island, finishing with a climb on narrow, bending road. If the boat and the flight fall on the same day, build in a margin: arriving with time to spare beats arriving fast and only just in time.

Frequently asked questions

Will I find a rank at the port?

There is no network of ranks to speak of up here. Ring the Haría dispatch, or ask in a bar or at your accommodation in the area; this portal takes no bookings — the call goes straight to the operator, and the wait depends on the free cars.

Will the taxi drop me at the ferry pier?

Yes, the pier is the usual point for both picking up and setting down in the village. Say on the phone that you are sailing and how much margin you have left, so the driver can judge the run and the room your luggage needs.

I have missed the ferry — what now?

Ask the ferry line about the next sailing: the timetable is theirs, and no taxi runs it. While you wait, you can ask the Haría dispatch for a vehicle back to your accommodation, or walk along the coast.

Is there room for ferry luggage?

Mention it when you order the vehicle: boots are not the same size in every car, and the cases for a crossing fill one quickly. If several of you are travelling with luggage, it is worth asking for a larger car from the start rather than once you are in and looking for help.
