Taxis beside the airport

Between Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife, next to the airfield, Matagorda runs low and quiet: short blocks of houses, nothing in the way of nightlife, and crossed on foot. The taxi turns up for meals out, for flights landing, and for the hop along the coast to the next centre.

Streets behind a long beach

Short streets run behind a long sandy beach, with supermarkets and a handful of restaurants spread about. There is no one spot that everyone heads for, so the fares tend to be down to the sand, back up for dinner, and little else — which is why the local taxi is used rarely, but at the moments it matters.

A residential patch with few stands

Where people live rather than stay on holiday, signposted ranks do not sit on every corner; the demand is not even enough. The usual step is to ring the Tías dispatch, which serves Puerto del Carmen and Matagorda on the same line, or to ask your accommodation whether it knows of a spot where cars regularly stop.

The terminal, a short hop away

Matagorda sits beside the terminal, which makes this one of the shortest transfers on the island: short and direct. Being close does not fix the price — the meter decides that. Nor does it mean a car is waiting at every hour; for an early start or a flight in the small hours, tell the dispatch beforehand.

Along the coast to Arrecife and Tías

The coast road joins Matagorda to the capital and to the settlement of Tías, and that is mostly what the taxi here does: dinner in Arrecife, the big shop, a medical appointment. When you order the car, give the address plainly — many of these streets look alike, and a pick-up is agreed far better with a landmark to go by.

Frequently asked questions

Will I see ranks around Matagorda?

Not many. It is residential and spread low, so the signposted ranks are scarce and sit where most people pass. Ring the Tías dispatch, or ask at your accommodation; this portal takes no bookings.

Is the airport far from Matagorda?

No — the area sits on the same stretch of coast as the terminal, which makes this one of the shortest runs on the island. The figure shown here is a road estimate dated with the day it was checked, and the final amount is whatever the meter reaches as it runs.

Would a taxi run me into Arrecife?

Yes, it is an ordinary run along the coast road, for the errands as much as for dinner. Ask ahead of time if it is first thing in the morning or late at night: away from the centre there are fewer cars out.

Are there cars working at night here?

They work, but they do not sit on every corner — the nightlife is in the neighbouring centres. Coming back from dinner somewhere else, ring the dispatch before you go out or when you are finished, and keep your accommodation address with a detail that is easy to pick out from the car.
