Taxi in Teguise

Teguise was the island capital before the conquest and keeps a cobbled old quarter of narrow, whitewashed streets, perched inland away from the coast. Its rhythm is that of a village: square, church, weekly market and streets that are not designed for a car to hurry through.

An old quarter not built for the car

The streets of the old quarter are narrow, cobbled and hilly; many of them are beyond what comfortable driving allows. The usual thing is for the vehicle to drop you in the lower part or at the nearest point it can reach, and for you to walk up the rest. If you have reduced mobility or are travelling with a pushchair, say so when you order the taxi so the driver picks the right access.

The weekly market

On Sundays the village fills up with the stalls of the traditional market, which take over the centre from early on. Parking is difficult, traffic slows and a great many people come up from the coast. Going by taxi and coming back afterwards avoids hunting for a space; it is worth giving notice ahead, because the dispatch serves the village and the Teguise coast at the same time.

Ranks and dispatch

In the village there is a signposted rank at the central points, but not in every street of the old quarter. If you see no car, call the Teguise dispatch, which serves the village and Costa Teguise equally on the same line, or ask in a village bar: they usually know when one tends to pass and which number to ring.

From the airport inland

Teguise is inland, so the journey from the terminal crosses the island rather than following the coast. To see the old quarter after landing, the most comfortable thing is to order the vehicle straight to the village; if you also have cases, say how many and what size when you call, not when the car is already in front of you.

Frequently asked questions

Can the taxi go up to the old quarter?

The streets are narrow and cobbled, and the usual thing is to drop you in the lower part or at whatever point the driver considers accessible. If you need to go higher, say so when you order the vehicle: it is sorted out better on the call than on arrival, when the car can no longer manoeuvre.

What is the best day to go to Teguise by taxi?

The traditional market is held on Sundays and fills the centre with stalls and visitors. Going by taxi avoids the parking problem on those days, but it is also when demand is highest: give the dispatch notice with margin to spare and ask about the way back before you settle in the village.

Is the airport far from Teguise?

The village is inland, so the journey crosses the island and is longer than to the settlements of the east coast. The indicative figure on this page is a road estimate with the date it was checked, and the amount is set by the meter as it runs.

How do I get back to my accommodation on the coast?

By calling the Teguise dispatch, which covers the village and Costa Teguise, or by asking in the village whether a taxi passes the point where you are. This portal handles no bookings: the notice goes straight to the operator and the wait depends on the free cars at the time.
