Taxi in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen runs along the coast of the municipality of Tías: it starts with its old quarter of narrow streets beside the sea and stretches into a long beach with a promenade, hotels and shops. It sits on the same coast as the airport, and that closeness gives the local taxi two jobs: short hops within the village and arrivals or departures from the terminal.

The old quarter and the long beach

The settlement has two distinct characters. The old quarter keeps the layout of a fishing village, with short streets, bars and the church; to the east the beach lengthens into a continuous promenade with hotels and shops. Ordering a taxi makes sense when the way back is at night, when you have to return from the far end of the promenade, or when you are going out to dinner from the old quarter and do not fancy walking back.

Ranks and calling the dispatch

The signposted ranks are concentrated around the beach and the busiest points of the promenade; in the old quarter, with its narrow streets and no wide pavements, you find them less often. When there is no car at the rank, the option is to call the Tías dispatch, which serves Puerto del Carmen and Matagorda on the same line.

The airport, to the north

It is one of the settlements closest to the terminal and the journey follows the coast road without detours. Even so, at the busiest arrival hours the queue at the airport rank can move slowly. If you are travelling with large luggage, a pushchair or as a group, order the vehicle in advance rather than sorting it out as you step off the plane.

Late departures

The settlement keeps a nightlife going for much of the year and late returns are common. At those times there are fewer cars about than at midday, so calling the dispatch before you go out avoids unpredictable waits at the roadside. This portal handles no bookings: the notice goes straight to the dispatch of the municipality.

Frequently asked questions

Is the airport far from Puerto del Carmen?

No: it is one of the settlements nearest the terminal and the journey goes straight along the coast. The indicative figure on this page is a road estimate with the date it was checked, not a guaranteed time; the amount you pay is set by the meter.

Can I walk along the beach and use the taxi only at night?

Yes, the promenade is flat and continuous and plenty of people walk by day. The taxi fits when you are coming back to the accommodation after dark, when you need to leave the settlement, or on the afternoons when the walk back feels long with the shopping or the beach gear.

Where do I pick up a taxi if I am in the old quarter?

In the streets of the old quarter there is not always a signposted rank. The usual thing is to call the Tías dispatch with the street, or to ask in the bar or at the accommodation, which tend to know the nearest pick-up point and how a car reaches it.
