The run to the northern port

At the north-eastern tip, in Haría, Órzola is where the boat to La Graciosa departs — and the drive from the terminal runs the length of the island. Almost everyone does it against a sailing time, which makes the planning here heavier than elsewhere on the island.

Map of Lanzarote

The drive up to Órzola

Ask anyone who has done it and they will tell you the same thing: this is the run where you notice the island is longer than it looks on the map. Out of the terminal the road runs the east coast, then climbs inland before the valley opens and drops you at the Haría shore. Tell the driver your final address when you get in rather than halfway — Órzola is a handful of streets, and "the port" and "the house above it" are two different drops.

Catching the La Graciosa boat

The sailing is the reason most people take this transfer, and it is the part worth thinking about the evening before you fly. A rough sea cancels the crossing and a cancellation is not always replaced the same day, so build in more margin than you think you need. Give the driver the sailing time as soon as you are in the car. The luggage travels up with you and comes out at the pier, and the taxi will not sit inside the port waiting unless you have agreed and paid for that beforehand.

Getting back out to the airport

This is where the north differs from the coast, and where a plan made on the beach would let you down. There is far less traffic passing through, so a car will not simply come by. If your flight is early, or you are travelling after the last boat of the day, ring the Haría dispatch well ahead and confirm again that morning. Standing at the pier hoping for a passing taxi is not a strategy, and least of all in winter.

Bus, car hire, or the taxi

The bus does reach the north, but it runs to a thinner timetable than the coast services and it leaves you walking the last stretch with your cases. Hiring a car gives you the run of the northern valleys, though parking in the village in high season is a different matter. For anyone connecting with the boat, the taxi or a car you have brought yourself remain the sensible answers.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be a taxi waiting in Órzola when I want to come back?

Do not count on one being there. The northern fleet is smaller than the one based along the south coast and it covers the whole municipality rather than a single village. For an early flight, tell the Haría dispatch the day before and check again on the morning itself. We cannot make that arrangement for you — the call is yours, direct to them.

Can I book a taxi to hold until the ferry goes?

Only if you settle it before you leave. The time is charged as waiting time, and no one can promise you the boat will sail: that decision rests with the sea and it is the sailing that changes, not the driver's willingness to stay.

Can you drop my bags at the pier itself?

Say the word when you get in and you will be set down at the boarding point. If you are carrying large cases, or travelling with a bicycle, tell them when you order the car so that one with room for it comes out to you.
