Reaching La Santa from the terminal
On the west coast, inside Tinajo, La Santa is the sort of place picked for its calm rather than its activity. Cars do leave the airport for it, yet they are not circulating there in numbers — so what matters is not the price but the sequence to follow before you travel.

Map of Lanzarote
Across the interior to the west coast
The route runs south out of the terminal, swings west and cuts across the middle of the island before it reaches the shore. There is little built up along the way and the ground is open and volcanic. What you say at the end counts for more than the distance covered: in La Santa the houses sit apart from one another and not all of them are named on maps, so the driver can only stop at the door you are able to describe.
The return is the leg to arrange
At the airport you have the queue at the rank to fall back on; back in La Santa you have nothing of the kind. Cars do not pass through a settlement this size, so the Tinajo dispatch — the one that covers La Santa — is who you ring, with 0034, Spain's international dialling code, in front of the number if you are calling from Ireland. Leave it settled the evening before when the flight is early. Waiting on the roadside for something to come by is the worst option of all, and worse out of season.
Tell them before the plane lands
Two things shape this: the hour you land and the time of year. Winter and weekdays put a smaller fleet on the road than summer does, which is why the dispatch at your destination should be told before the aircraft touches down rather than when you step out of the terminal. Arriving in the small hours or travelling as a group makes it more necessary still. Bear in mind that this portal books nothing: the call goes straight to the operator.
Bus, hire car, or the rank
The coastal bus runs along the main road, but it stops infrequently and some distance from where most people stay: workable with a soft bag and inside its service hours, less so otherwise. Hiring a car is the usual choice in La Santa, because without your own vehicle getting about in the west is slow. Arriving off the flight with cases, though, the rank at the terminal is still the straightforward answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a chance of finding one without arranging it first? +
The cars working this coast belong to the Tinajo fleet, and a settlement this size keeps none of its own, so nothing is guaranteed to be passing. What helps is ringing the dispatch before you need the car, and more so for a pick-up in the small hours or in midwinter.
How do I make sure an early departure happens? +
One way removes the doubt: hire a car at the airport, where the desks are on site, so nothing then depends on what is free on the day. Otherwise leave the transfer agreed with the Tinajo dispatch the evening before and confirm it again in the morning.
Which suits me better for getting about, a taxi or a hire car? +
They do different jobs. For the arrival itself with cases, the taxi is the direct answer. For the days that follow, a hire car gives you more freedom, since the villages and beaches of the west are spread out and the bus service is limited. How often you plan to leave the house settles it.
