The run into the valley of the palms

Haría lies to the north, in the valley of a thousand palms, and the road from the terminal first crosses the island through the middle before dropping down into it. Among the longest trips from the airport, it also changes scenery twice: coast, then interior, and the valley waiting at the end.

Map of Lanzarote

Climbing to the valley of the palms

This is the airport run that crosses the island rather than skirting it. The car climbs to the middle, crosses the plain of fields, then takes the northern road down into Haría — bends on the way up and on the way down, and a driver who will take them gently if you ask. The last stretch runs through narrow village streets, so if you are staying in the centre it is often easiest to get out at the entrance and walk in.

Three things worth knowing before you set off

If you are prone to travel sickness, ask for the front seat and say you would rather the slopes were taken slowly — it changes nothing about the length of the journey. If your visit falls on market day, parking and traffic in the centre both get difficult, and being dropped at the edge saves the argument. And keep the exact name of where you are staying to hand: the valley has scattered houses that a first-time driver will not find on a first pass.

The northern fleet, and what it means for you

One dispatch covers several centres across the north, which means the cars are shared between them rather than waiting in any one place. That has a consequence: for a set pick-up — most of all a departure to the airport in the small hours — leave it agreed with the Haría dispatch hours ahead and confirm again in the morning. Ringing a different municipality will not get you collected from this one. This portal books nothing; the call is yours, direct.

Bus, hire car, or the taxi

The bus runs north less often than it runs along the coast, so it suits a light bag and an unhurried day, and it leaves a stretch on foot at the end. Hiring a car gives you the valley and the whole northern coast on your own terms, with the usual difficulty of parking in the village in high season. For coming in from the terminal itself, the taxi remains the most direct answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the road a difficult one?

It has bends on the climb and on the descent from the centre of the island, which is ordinary enough on Lanzarote. If you are easily carsick, take the front seat and ask the driver to go gently — the journey takes no longer for it.

Will there be a taxi in Haría to take me back to the airport?

There will, but the northern fleet serves several centres at once. Set the pick-up with the Haría dispatch before you travel, particularly for an early departure or a Sunday, when fewer cars are out.

Can the driver wait while I shop in the village?

You can ask, but the time is charged as waiting time and has to be agreed before you get in. The simpler plan is to be dropped at the entrance, leave the bags where you are staying and walk into the village afterwards.
