Adapted taxis and transport for reduced mobility
Adapted taxis have a ramp or a platform and wheelchair restraints, but they are not on every corner nor in every municipality at once: you ask for them. This page explains what to say when you call so that the vehicle which arrives really works for the journey you have in mind.
What to ask for when you call
Say that it is a journey for someone with reduced mobility and be specific: whether the person travels seated in their own chair or moves to the seat, whether the chair is manual or powered, how many people are accompanying them and whether there are sticks, a frame or oxygen. The phrase "adapted taxi" by itself says nothing about what you need and may send the wrong vehicle.
The information that avoids surprises
Also say whether the pick-up point has a ramp, a high kerb or steps: an adapted vehicle that cannot get close to the passenger does not solve the journey. At hotels and apartments it is usually enough to ask reception to keep the access and the turning space at the entrance clear.
Real availability
The adapted fleet of each municipality is small — sometimes only one vehicle is available at a time — and if it is out on a job, you wait or you look in the next municipality. That is why notice hours ahead is not a whim, and why an airport transfer is confirmed the evening before and checked again in the morning.
Luggage, company and payment
The folded chair and the companions take up space: declare them as you would the cases. Payment is the same as in any other taxi, by card or cash, and the receipt is issued as usual. If the journey is agreed as a service at a price fixed before you set off, ask what it includes and what happens if the time changes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I travel in my own wheelchair? +
Yes, if the vehicle is licensed for it, with the appropriate restraint. Ask when you book and confirm whether the chair travels occupied or folded: it depends on the model of vehicle and chair, and it is worth knowing before the car arrives.
Do I need to give notice in advance? +
Yes, almost always, and the reason is availability rather than price: when you give notice, the dispatch checks which adapted vehicle is free at that hour and confirms it or offers you another slot. Without that step, whether the right car turns up is a matter of chance.
Can I ask for one to go to the airport in the small hours? +
Yes, by leaving the notice the evening before and confirming it in the morning. At those hours there are fewer vehicles in service and the margin is smaller: with the confirmation in hand you know what time to leave the house.
